Points to remember when prescribing drugs for patients who are suffering from glucose-6-phosphate deficiency

  • genetically heterogeneous : many different genetic variants.. thus drugs found safe in one g6pd deficient patient may not be equally safe in another
  • no test specifically designed to identify potential risks in g6pd deficient subjects have been carried out
  • the risk and severity of haemolysis is almost always dose-related
